Notes

Introductions

  • Han: First summer at TW (past internships); 1) DCO; 2) some research collaboration with Prof. Ji
  • Corey: will stay at TW for summer, will discuss with Prof Fox on topics (hopefully some DCO work)
  • Marshall: Beginning of June DCO Data Science Day; Middle of June Geodata 2014 Boulder, CO; July: ESIP summer meeting and DCO Summer School; DCO DS will be the major research work
  • Anirudh: will work with prof. Fox on research
  • Sumithra: DCO DS summer intern, working on data visualizaiton, esp. the Deep Life community
  • Jin: Finishing up Thesis so he can get the hell out of there! (per PCW)  still work on something about it
  • Patrick: Principal Software Engineer on staff, ECOOP; S2S; DataONE OPeNDAP work; RDESC; DCO (main focus); ToolMatch ESIP project; Website maintenance; Infrastructure support
    • will be in town end of next week and the week after
  • Stephan: senior software engineer on staff, focusing on research initiatives for the summer. Current focus data.rpi.edu, S2S, broad lab software initiatives.
  • Prof. Deborah McGuinness: constellation co-chair, one of the three professors
  • Prof. Peter Fox:
    • Will have a productive summer;
    • Project vs. Research, 20hrs/week for project, recommend the other 20hrs/week for research;
    • Take advantage of people here in the lab to make progress in research - explore new ideas, interact with people, make improvements;
    • Two other summer interns will do RPI human resources analytics
      • Patrick: something our data.rpi.edu work could utilize and contribute to?
    • Data Science activities
  • Marshall and Peter’s introduction about Geodata 2014:
    • two panels and two breakouts
    • for students, it’s more like some discussion
    • possible contribution for students: asking questions
  • Data analytics: with a big set of data you are not familiar, even a simple visualization can provide great insights
  • VIVO # of triples = 242,752 - SELECT (COUNT(*) AS ?no) { ?s ?p ?o  }
  • RDESC # of triples = 1.4 billion
  • Semantic similarity and provenance distance (Jin proposed about a year ago):
    • More background info: NASA collaborators want to quantify provenance distance - there should be some nodes between data source to end product, how is difference between generation processes. Some certain sub parts of a provenance graph could be more important rather than treat all nodes in a provenance graph equally.
    • It would be nice if we can take our summer work as a case study for the provenance distance study: to build provenance graphs and write queries
    • http://provenanceweb.net/ (need to be fixed)
    • http://provenanceweb.org
    • redrugs effort - http://tw.rpi.edu/web/taxonomy/term/109 this will be updated soon to include the link to the nanopublications store
