Presentation Interface (CoMP)

During Summer, 2011, James developed an interface for presenting RDF records of CoMP data products. The prototype is driven by SPARQL querying against a Virtuoso RDF database, combined with a follow-up XSLT transformation.

Questionnaire on Provenance Usage in Solar Physics community

To get a better idea of what kinds of provenance/metadata Solar Physicists need/use, Patrick, Stephan and James developed a questionnaire for distribution at HAO and affiliated informatics groups (HAOQuestionnaire.doc [Download]).

We made this survey available online at https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHJYeHphNHFZaThEWlNsYzBqSFNuUnc6MQ, and announced it through a few email listings (HAO's Staff Notes Daily and SolarNews lists, as well as the BESSIG's (Boulder Earth and Space Science Informatics Group) mailing list).

Introduction to Provenance

Provenance Metadata:

Definition: A record that describes entities and processes involved in producing and delivering or otherwise influencing a (physical or digital) resource. Provenance provides a critical foundation for assessing authenticity, enabling trust, and allowing reproducibility. Provenance assertions are a form of contextual metadata and can themselves become important records with their own provenance.

ACOS Use Case 1

Goal

Submission of a clarification request on the purpose of a provenance step.

Description

In this use case, a primary actor does two things: (i) views a provided definition for a function corresponding to a process execution, (ii) makes a request for a clarification on the provided definition.

Here, assume the following definitions:
Function: a section of RDF-based data, based on a pmlp:InferenceRule definition.
Process Execution: a section of RDF-based data, based on a pmlp:InferenceStep definition.

The PML-A Ontology

Annotation provenance enables management via provenance based filtering.
* Defined user attributes in PML-A enable system familiar with ontology to work with annotations
* Many different kinds of attributes could be defined – in different ontologies
* PML-A ready tools will be able to recognize defined attributes.

Ways User Annotations Can Expand Provenance Records

We currently consider two approaches to allow users to extend provenance records:

  • Clarifications: These are centered around discussions between web users, in which a particular user asks for additional information about a provenance element (a clarification request).

The Advanced Coronal Observing System (ACOS) consists a suite of instruments designed to observe the upper solar atmosphere - Operated through the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO) (http://mlso.hao.ucar.edu/mlso_about.html). At MLSO, data is gathered by instruments in ACOS and transmitted to a data processing center at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. At NCAR, various forms of processing are conducted on data, depending on the source instrument.
