The purpose of this project is to provide researchers within the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute community the ability to store their data and metadata, to have it discovered within the Institute and outside the Institute, and for researchers to find the data they are looking for.

To do this the team has chosen DSpace, a tool that preserves and enables easy and open access to all types of digital content including text, images, moving images, mpegs and data sets.

Data is registered with DSpace and assigned a data handle, which is provided by Handle Service.

When registering the data through DSpace, the provider is shown a form to add metadata regarding the data. This metadata is stored in a PostgreSQL, a open source object-relational database system, in the form of dcterms (Dublin Core Terms). Click for a complete list of possible dcterms used by DSpace.
