Concepts:Semantic Web

The Linked Vocabulary API is a specification for publishing RESTful APIs of vocabularies represented in the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) on the web. Vocabularies published using the Linked Vocabulary API are published as linked data with a simple RESTful API for additional search and discovery functionality. The Linked Vocabulary API addresses the common need for making structured vocabularies available on the web in a manner that is easily consumable using common web client technologies. This work grew out of Ocean Coastal Mapping (OCM) / Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP) efforts to develop a data portal that provides access to coastal datasets gathered by multiple government agencies and tagged using several different vocabularies. For the data portal to provide complete and accurate search results it needed to be able to consume and semantically reconcile the many vocabularies used to tag the data. The API provides a mechanism for consumption of full vocabularies, single terms, term hierarchies, related terms, performing searches on terms, and discovering mappings between terms in separate vocabularies. By using the Linked Vocabulary API to publish agency vocabularies the OCM/CMSP data portal would be able to provide complete and semantically accurate searches across its diverse data holdings. Recent presentations of work done with the Linked Vocabulary API as part of the OCM/CMSP data portal efforts have resulted in the API receiving growing interest from the research community. In this contribution we present the Linked Vocabulary API design and deployment process.

Description: Vocabulary and Ontology development within the context of the overall development of Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP) and Ocean and Coastal Modeling (OCM) portals by environmental inter-agency collaboration to provide search and browse options that inspire user confidence that all relevant information has been found; data providers will know how to create metadata to increase the likelihood that their information will be found.
