Extensible User Interface Framework for Faceted Browsing Applications

Abstract:

The S2S Framework is a multi-year project developed under the umbrella of the Semantic eScience Framework, funded by the National Science Foundation Office of Cyberinfrastructure. Originally developed in the context of oceanography, S2S has since evolved into an application integration framework for matching user interface (UI) components with the inputs and outputs of Semantic Web services or classes and properties of RDF data. S2S provides an ontology and software stack for de- ploying UIs on top of OpenSearch services and FacetOntology instances. In addition to the ontology and software contributions, this thesis also provides and evaluates a set of extensions to the FacetOntology, which are aimed better leveraging the ex- tensible UI framework of S2S. While the focus of this thesis is on faceted browsing, the potential for S2S to provide more general application integration scenarios for eScience is also discussed. Various state-of-the-art data discovery dashboards have been developed using S2S, including a geospatial portal for oceanographic data from the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office, and the Inter- national Open Government Dataset Search interface provided by the Linking Open Government Data group at the Tetherless World Constellation. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the extensibility aspects of S2S, and their role in the trajectory towards application integration.
