So ... what is it that people need when they first join the lab. Well, really it depends on what role you're playing in the lab. Are you a new member of the faculty? New member of the staff? A new masters or Ph.D. student? A new undergraduate? A visitor to the lab? Or a project collaborator? There are some things in common that people need to know. Well, except for visitors. So let's start with visitors

Visiting the Lab

  • This includes project collaborators, visiting lecturers and speakers, parents of students
  • We are located at 105 8th Street, in the Winslow Building on the RPI Campus, in Troy, NY.
  • You can find contact information and a map here
  • Once you get to the Winslow Building, we are on the second floor. Please use the elevator to get up to the second floor. Doors are secured with key card access.
  • You'll want to see Jacky Carley in room 2108. Her extension is 4384
  • Jacky can give you a parking pass, if you need one, and a temporary badge to get in and out of the building (if you need one)
  • The three professors have offices right around Jacky's office, so you shouldn't have a problem finding them

Common needs for new members of the lab

  • This includes new faculty, staff, Masters and Ph.D. students, undergraduates, and project collaborators
  • You will need a TW Website account.
    • Go to http://tw.rpi.edu, and along the left you'll see a link to create/request a new account
    • on that page fill in all the information, enter the CAPTCHA characets, and click submit
    • You'll receive an email with a confirmation code in it. Enter that code into the page you are taken to after clicking submit
    • The next step is ours. We receive an email with your request. We accept the request and you receive an email with your new login information
    • this is an LDAP account and will give you access to many of the infrastructure resources in the lab

Members of the Lab

  • This includes new faculty, staff, Masters and Ph.D. students, and undergraduates
  • You're going to need better access to the building
    • First time you come to Winslow you'll need to use the elevator to get to the second floor. Doors require specific key card access. So even if you have an RPI badge, you'll need to get that access added
    • Find Jacky in room 2108 of Winslow and let her know who you are, first of all, say hi (she's as friendly as they come), and let her know that you need access to Winslow. Give her your RIN and she'll take care of you.
  • Where to sit
    • If you don't already have a seat assignment then you can sit anywhere in the kitchen area. Lots of people sit there anyway, just cause everyone travels through the kitchen. Great place to work.
    • If you do get a seat assignment, please contact Patrick West so we can update the name plates for your room and create a name plate for you.
  • Keeping it Clean
    • The Tetherless World Faculty and Staff have worked hard to provide you all a great work environment, a place to do your work, resources to get your work done, exciting and challenging projects and research.
    • Because of collaborations with local, state, and federal government agencies, corporations, and other research organizations and universities, we constantly have important visitors coming through our building.
    • And, we are proud of the Tetherless World Constellation, the work we're doing here, and the impact that we are having in the research community the world over.
