How do I add footnotes to my page

Printer-friendly version

We'll discuss about footnotes module here.

There are two different ways in which footnotes may be added; in Textile style or using fn tags with or without labels. Each of these methods are described below.

Textile Style

  • Syntax
    • [# footnote here]
  • Effect
    • Inserts automatically numbered footnotes.
    • Footnotes are listed at the end of the node.
    • No hyperlinks are created to jump to footnotes and back. [1]
  • Reference in main text
    • [1]
  • Footnote in footnotes list
    • fn1. footnote here
  • Compatibility with input formats
    • Works for all 3 formats : Full HTML, Filtered HTML, and Wiki

fn tag without label

  • Syntax
    • [fn] footnote here [/fn]
    • <fn> footnote here </fn>
  • Effect
    • Inserts automatically numbered footnotes.
    • By default, footnotes are listed at the end of the node.
    • Hyperlinks are created to jump to footnotes and back. 1
    • To refer to a footnote created before in that node, either use explicit labels, as described later, or use the label that would be generated automatically (let it be v) in [fn value=v][/fn].
    • If a footnote content is the same as one created before, then no new footnote label is created for it and the old label is reused. To illustrate we add same footnotes twice at the end of this sentence. 2 2
  • Reference in main text hyp
    • 1 (or some text1)
  • Footnote in footnotes list hyp
    • 1. footnote here
    • Note: Use [footnotes] or [footnotes/] to list the footnotes anywhere in the document
  • Compatibility with input formats
    • angled brackets do not work with Filtered HTML and Wiki formats

fn tag with label

  • Syntax
    • [fn value=v] footnote here[/fn]
  • Effect
    • Footnotes are labeled with the value assigned to the 'value' attribute. If the attribute (v) is an integer value then the label generated for an unlabeled footnote immediately following this labeled footnote has the label v+1 .
    • By default, footnotes are listed at the end of the node.
    • Hyperlinks are created to jump to footnotes and back. 1
    • Once a labeled footnote is defined, that footnote can be referenced again by using the same label in [fn value = v][/fn].
    • If a new footnote with different content but same label as one created before in that node is created, the content of the new footnote will be ignored.
  • Reference in main text hyp
    • v (or some textv)
  • Footnote in footnotes list hyp
    • v. footnote here
    • Note:Use [footnotes] or [footnotes/] to list the footnotes anywhere in the document
  • Compatibility with input formats
    • Works for all 3 formats : Full HTML, Filtered HTML, and Wiki

Some tests were done on this page. You may have a look!

  • 1. a. b. If multiple references then unique hyperlinks are created for each case

  • 2. a. b. This feature is also described as "if two footnotes have the exact same content, they will be collapsed into one as if using the same value="attribute"."

  • hyp. a. b. c. d. Hyperlinks to navigate to and from footnotes list are not shown here

fn1. Not sure about referring to a footnote created before in the same node. Whether that can be done, and if yes, then how?
