General workflow

RPI Campus Map: check RPI Map

  1. Talk with Jacky
  2. Goto Human Resource to finish paper work
    1. Remember to bring in your identification (e.g. passport) and work authorization (e.g. H1B approval)
    2. If you want direct deposit of payroll, bring in a blank check
    3. For empolyee with H1B transfer: you may start working if your the new H1B application is filed and old H1B approval is not expired.
  3. Wait generally 3 business days (up to 1 week) for your name to be included in the system. Call Campus Card Office (x6670) to check
    1. Once you are in, go to Campus Card Office at Union 1502 to get your RPI ID card (with the Rensselaer ID Number (RIN) number)
  4. You can setup your CS email and account (also for homepage) BEFORE you get your RIN, ask Jacky to help
    1. Tell Jim your email address when you get it; He will add you to lab list and to various other resources.
    2. Forward CS mail to external email: set it in the file /servers/mail/forward/YOUR_USER_ID
    3. imap.cs.rpi.edu; pop.cs.rpi.edu; webmail.cs.rpi.edu; mail.cs.rpi.edu (SMTP)
    4. ssh: remote.cs.rpi.edu
  5. You can also setup your access to lab computers BEFORE you get your RIN - ask Li or Jie.
  6. You can also setup your group wiki access BEFORE you get your RIN - ask Li or Jie [See below].
  7. Give your RIN number to Jacky; she will help you to establish
    1. Building access
    2. Phone number
    3. Long distance call code
    4. Business Card
  8. With RIN, you can
    1. Setup your account at Rensselaer Self-Service Information System
    2. Setup your RPI account (for email, homepage, etc.) follow this direction
      1. RPI mail forward is possible, check http://helpdesk.rpi.edu/update.do?artcenterkey=156
    3. Access gym and library (With RPI Card)
  9. After a few weeks, attend New Employee Orientation (date informed by Human Resource)
    1. Submit insurance forms and other forms within 1 month after the date of hiring!
