Abstract  ICE (Identifying Causes and Effects) is a ICE (Identifying Causes and Effects) is a prototype system that exploits models of structures and functions of physical systems for use in multiple reasoning tasks including diagnosis, explanation, and prediction. ICE was implemented in the BB1 architecture and runs on the TI Explorer LISP machine.Though it was used primarily as a reasoning component of Guardian, a prototype real-time monitoring experty system for hospital intensive care unit, the approach and the knowledge in some of the models developed are general and can be used in several domains. eneral and can be used in several domains.
