abstract The discovery and dissemination of information is a vital part of many fields of endeavor, including intelligence analysis. We present here tools that leverage Semantic Web techniques to automate significant parts of this process, to facilitate collaboration and data exchange among coworkers, to enable the reuse of reports, to enhance the discovery and selection of documents and information, and to prevent many classes of mistakes whose discovery today requires human intervention. Our research focuses on minimally-intrusive tools and automated analysis techniques to assist in the creation and consumption of structured information and semi-structured reports. Existing documents are analyzed using semantic techniques and converted into Semantic Web documents using automated techniques or manually by the document author using standard word processing packages. Traditional information retrieval techniques are enhanced with more deeply structured knowledge to provide more accurate results, to enable disambiguation of separate entities sharing the same name, and to reduce the burden placed on the human in question answering. Both automated and guided analysis is performed in a traditional spreadsheet tool for use in intelligent reasoning systems and agents. E-mail programs are enhanced to allow collaboration and sharing of knowledge and documents via e-mail messages, even when the vocabularies used in those documents may contain duplicates or contradictions. The end result is an organization of information whose source material and published (i.e., reported) material is linked in a hyperweb of semantically aware content.
