| abstract | [[abstract::An adaptive intelligent system must reason about and interact with other dynamic entities in real time. Tasks requiring an adaptive intelligent system range from the mundane (e.g., driving a car, conducting a conversation, playing tennis) to the sophisticated (e.g., directing a manufacturing operation, flying state-of-the-art aircraft, managing a business). We have examined several such tasks, in particular: (a) management of patients on life-support systems in a medical intensive care unit [1]; and (b) real-time control of material processing [12]. Despite the differences among the domains of these tasks, they share fundamental requirements, which we characterize below for a hypothetical patient-management system called "PM".|An adaptive intelligent system must reason about and interact with other dynamic entities in real time.
