abstract The standardization of eXtensible Markup Language(XML) and its expected wide usage on the Internet present new opportunities for knowledge representation and acquisition. The opportunities are two-fold. First, knowledge engineering can become much more efficient a task if XML documents can be directly translated into a knowledge representation language and parsed into a knowledge-base. Secondly, KR principles and reasoning mechanisms can be integrated into XML to enhance its expressiveness and enable other XML applications, such as database queries to be more expressive, accurate and powerful. The two objectives can be achieved by enhancing the semantic expressiveness of XML, especially XML Document Type Definitions(DTDs). This paper suggests various aspects of XML DTDs that can be enhanced using KR principles. The paper also proposes a mapping between XML DTDs and knowledge representation frame languages, taking a first step towards parsing XML documents into knowledge bases.
