abstract	Accurate diagnosis is of central importance for good medical decision making. Diagnosis can be complex, particularly as the amount of general medical knowledge accumulates and as patients become more medically complex, due to new life-sustaning treatments. Thus, researchers have been attempting to develop computer-assisted medical diagnostic tools to aid physicians in this task (1, 2, 3). This chapter describes a method for computer-based diagnosis that uses a probabilistic causal knowledge representation and a probabilistic inference technique.
