  • browse Mediawiki extension
  • Jie: build semantic wiki from sratch and but not succesful adopted, then came across SMW
  • Li: not convinced by performance initally in 2006, in 2008, get referral by Jie Bao through Social network

best practices

  • semantic knowledge discovery
    • a database of 4000 thing, and I can get external data from outside, I need to query 12 data sources, and use them to discover interesting patterns using bot
  • collaborative paper writing. challenge, how to get ready for pub.
    • Access control is the most important, especially for draft
    • google doc has limitations, it cannot transclude, -- but that is not the strength of SMW (maybe MW)
    • how hard and valuable to extract/embed semantic annotation of PPT, for better search
  • directory of vocabulary
  • SMW has centralized storage data - all information about the page stay on the page
  • semantics generation: top-down and bottom-up
    • when rendering an existing ontology, we can only focus on adding natural language description
    • we need partial top-down, but also some bottom-up
  • do we want decentralized description and/or centralized description
  • SMW should fit different level of users
  • multilingual support
  • n-ary relation, should my education experience be in my page, and how do i query it?
