abstract	We present an approach to generating English explanations in DME, a device modeling and simulation system. Our Implementation supports a wide variety of explanations about devices and their behavior, and minimizes the burden on the people who create and maintain the models. The approach makes use of descriptive elements that reside in the models and can be combined in a variety of ways to produce explanations from different perspectives.The thrust of this paper is both theoretical and practical: It contains theoretical background and design decisions, as well as details of our implementation and a manual for using the explanation feature in DME.
