Its literal meaning
- 鲍 (Bao), the family name (surname, last name), means "salted fish" or "ormer". However, the surname is originated from a place name 鲍邑 (Bao Yi, or the Town of Bao), near to the city of Jinan today. Bao Yi was the feod of a nobleman Si Jingshu (姒敬叔) around the 9th century, BC, whose son adopted 鲍 as their family name. Another documented source of the surname was from 俟力伐氏(Silifa) , a nomadic tribe of Xianbei from Manchuria and eastern Mongolia, which adopted 鲍 as their Chinese-style surname when they moved to China around the 5th century AD.
I inherit the surname from, no surprise, my father, who changed to this surname of his step-father's. My biological grand-father was surnamed "程" (Cheng).
- 捷 (Jie), the given name (first name), means victory, success or swiftness.
