CSCI 6966 Advanced Semantic Web (Fall 2008)

Syllabus

Course Description

This course aims at showing the cutting edge research on semantic web and encouraging research capability for advanced students. Students attending this course should expect reading, presenting and evaluating important research papers on semantic web, identifying and surveying interesting semantic web research areas.

Prerequisite

CSCI 6962 Semantic Web (Fall 2007) OR PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR

Presentation Guidelines

general notes

  • each student should expect presenting:
    • 2 conference papers
    • 1 journal paper
    • an overview of a selected research area.
  • each lesson consists of
    • presentation session (~15min for conference paper)
    • discussion session
    • optionally practice session (e.g. put things on wiki).

for speakers

  • put yourself in the place as the author
  • coverage, e.g. the idea, strength, weakness,...
  • fair use web resource

for audience

  • questions should better target at the idea
  • your written comments should be friendly and constructive as they may go to the public

tentative presentation protocol

  • speakers fill in the class schedule on class wiki page
  • speakers email to approve paper, add email filter in subject line [CSCI 6966] (one week before class
    • include the paper name, links to paper
    • better not choose papers written by Jim, Li, Jie, Deborah
    • paper selection should be approved by Jim OR Li
  • speakers post (links to) paper after approval (one week before class)
  • credit seeking audience should post at least one question (before class)
  • speakers post presentation (after class)

Conference Paper Selection Criteria

Please choose conference papers from any major conference. Below is a list of recommended conferences:

  • WWW
  • ISWC
  • ESWC
  • AAAI (web track)
  • CHI
  • others? please recommend.

note that all paper selection must be approved by instructor beforehand.


Journal Paper Selection Criteria

Please choose journal paper from high quality journals and the journal paper should be highly related either semantic web or your research direction.
