Abstract
Since its inception the World Wide Web has changed the ways people work, play, communicate, collaborate, and educate. There is, however, a growing realization among researchers across a number of disciplines (such as Computer Science, Sociology, Psychology, Economy, Mathematics, Law and Media) that without fundamental understanding of the current, evolving and potential Web, we may be missing or delaying opportunities for new and revolutionary capabilities. This course attempts to provide the foundations of that understanding, exploring the fundamentals topics of Web Science, including a historical review of the evolution of the Web, key algorithms that make the Web function, popular Web-based information management systems, social issues with respect to Web use and effect, enabling standards and technologies for Web-based knowledge representation and data integration, and advance topics on future trends of the Web.
Bio of the Instructor
Li Ding is a research scientist in the Tetherless World Constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). As an early adopter of the Semantic Web, his research interest covers many practical aspects of the Semantic Web, such as semantic search, user interaction, web-scale computing, ontology, provenance, privacy and trust, information integration and social computing. He is also known as the founder of Swoogle, one of the first semantic web search engine on the Web. He is an active researcher in Semantic Web community and has served as organizer and program committee member for major conferences such as WWW, ISWC, CIKM, AAMAS, and many other international workshops. He is a former Kodak postdoctoral fellow in the Knowledge Systems, Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (KSL) at Stanford University. He received Ph.D. in computer science from University of Maryland Baltimore County. Prior to that, he received B.S. and M.S. in computer science from Peking University.
