]> 2012-02-11T04:00:56-05:00 Unifying workflows for finding and using data across discipline boundaries In implementing what were originally distinct workflows for discovering, accessing and using data in the Virtual Solar-Terrestrial Observatory project, we found that using the semantic encoding of the science search and use concepts in an ontology, coupled with a robust software environment to build the data and user interface framework we were able to implement semantic filtering to assist the user in navigating formerly very confusing workflow selections. By using this filtering and inference, the number of clicks to get to the data were significantly reduced. This also allowed a unification of the workflows spanning both solar physics and terrestrial upper atmospheric data archives. We report on what we have learned about the processes involved in developing VSTO and the required semantics and our plans for further simplification of user search and use of interdisciplinary data.
