The virtual solar-terrestrial observatory production release
Abstract In the Virtual Solar-Terrestrial Observato In the Virtual Solar-Terrestrial Observatory (VSTO) project, we are providing an production electronic repository of observational data spanning the solar-terrestrial physics domain: from the solar upper atmosphere to the terrestrial upper atmosphere with very diverse data holdings. We have implemented tools and infrastructure for accessing and using the data based on a semantic web framework. In this presentation, we describe the design, current and planned production releases, and the technical infroastructure. We also present what we have learned about the processes involved in developing VSTO and the required semantics including: the level of scientific detail needed to be encoded in the ontologies, how they affect the framework architecture, choice of technologies and service interfaces. VSTO is an NSF-funded joint effort between the High Altitude Observatory and the Scientific Computing Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and McGuinness Associates Consulting.
