Our project, the Semantically-Enabled Scie … Our project, the Semantically-Enabled Scientific Data Integration (SESDI), aims to demonstrate how ontologies implemented within existing distributed technology frameworks provide essential, interoperable, reusable, robust support necessary for interdisciplinary scientific research activities of national importance. We aim to enable an evolution toward science measurement processing systems as well as for data and information framework support for specific applications areas. Initially we are focusing on the integration of volcanology and atmospheric data sources in support of investigations into relationships between volcanic activity and global climate. We report on the current stage of the project which has been to develop the volcano ontology and connections to existing volcano data sources and the plans for connecting to the atmospheric ontologies (of SWEET) and their data sources. We also outline our efforts toward supporting the community generation, use and evolution of ontologies in Earth and space sciences.
