Although the fields of medical informatics … Although the fields of medical informatics and biomedical imaging haveexperienced explosive growth in the last decade, there has been onlylimited interaction between researchers in these fields. However, anemerging need for efficient information-management tools that could helporganizations respond to increasing demand for high-quality care at lowcost mandates greater cooperation and collaboration among experts inbiomedical imaging, informatics, and clinical medicine. In this article weexamine the formation of ties among members of the three researchcommunities in light of the necessity to enhance information sharing. Weconclude that interdisciplinary research that bridges these fields cansuccessfully stimulate innovation and investigative productivity whileassuring coordination with other clinical computing efforts and helping topromote improved patient care in an era of restricted resources. nt care in an era of restricted resources.
