Strategic knowledge is used by an agent to … Strategic knowledge is used by an agent to decide what action to perform next, where actions have consequences external to the agent. This article presentsa computer-mediated method for acquiring strategic knowledge from people. Thegeneral knowledge acquisition problem and the special difficulties ofacquiring strategic knowledge are analyzed in terms of representationmismatch: the difference between the form in which knowledge is available fromthe world and the form required for knowledge systems. ASK is an interactiveknowledge acquisition tool that is designed to address representationmismatch. ASK elicits strategic knowledge from people in the form ofjustifications for action choices, and generates strategy rules thatoperationalize and generalize the expert's advice. The basic approach isdemonstrated with a human-computer dialog in which ASK acquires strategicknowledge for medical diagnosis and treatment. The rationale for andconsequences of specific design decisions in ASK are analyzed, and the scopeof applicability and limitations of the approach are assessed. The paperconcludes by discussing the contribution of knowledge representation toautomated knowledge acquisition. ntation toautomated knowledge acquisition.
