We present an approach to generating Engli … We present an approach to generating English explanations in DME, a devicemodeling and simulation system. Our Implementation supports a wide variety ofexplanations about devices and their behavior, and minimizes the burden on thepeople who create and maintain the models. The approach makes use ofdescriptive elements that reside in the models and can be combined in avariety of ways to produce explanations from different perspectives.The thrust of this paper is both theoretical and practical: It containstheoretical background and design decisions, as well as details of ourimplementation and a manual for using the explanation feature in DME. for using the explanation feature in DME.
