A methodology for determining patients' eligibility for clinical trials
Abstract The task of determining patients' eligibil The task of determining patients' eligibility for clinical trials is knowledgeand data intensive. In this paper, we present a model for the task ofeligibility determination, and describe how a computer system can assistclinical researchers in performing that task. We describe qualitative andprobabilistic approaches to computing and summarizing the eligibility status ofpotentially eligible patients. We compare the two approaches, and propose asynthesis that draws on the strength of each approach. The result of applyingthese techniques to a database of HIV-positive patient cases suggests thatcomputer programs such as ours can increase the accrual rate of eligiblepatients into clinical trials. These methods also may be applied to the task ofdetermining from electronic patient records whether practice guidelines apply inparticular clinical situations. es apply inparticular clinical situations.
