abstract: In the development of the Virtual Solar-Terrestrial Observatory we were faced with several choices as to how to interoperate with an existing set of large heterogeneous online repositories of scientific data, catalog services, data access and transport services, preview and plotting services across a set of diverse projects implemented in different ways. We present the approach that we developed using a set of use cases which led to definition of what we would encode in the ontology and thus the semantic framework and what interface choices would be made to defined the access and interoperability with the existing resources. VSTO is an NSF-funded joint effort between the High Altitude Observatory and the Scientific Computing Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and McGuinness Associates Consulting.
