abstract: Experience with expert systems indicates that automated explanation of the rationale for computer-based advice is central to acceptance by decision makers. In this paper, we present strategies for computer-based explanation of measurable multiattribute value functions, and we demonstrate these strategies with implemented systems in marketing, process control, and medicine. Our approach illustrates the feasibility of explaining value-theoretic models automatically in the qualitative style of expert systems.
