Users construct workflows using a high-level Virtual Data Language (VDL) [45,64] VDL conforms to a schema that represents datasets, transformations, paramterized instances of transformations called derivations, invocation objects.
Lineage is represented in VDL and is managed by a virtual data catalog (VDC) service (maps the VDL to a relational schema SQL)
Novel use: plan and estimate the cost of regenerating datasets.
