abstract: This paper describes an expert system that automates error-finding in particle accelerator facilities. The Automated Beam Line Expert (ABLE) combines symbolic reasoning with a well-understood physical model and sophisticated mathematical optimization techniques. Much of ABLE's knowledge was not known beforehand; instead, it was developed interactively by using ABLE to solve problems with simulated beam data.
