Overview
You will form a team of 2-3 to build a mashup for a New York State Senator, a County/City in New York State or, with approval from the Professor, a similar NYS oriented data mashup. Your mashup must use semantic data from http://www.nysenate.gov/opendata hosted at http://logd.tw.rpi.edu/sparql and data from APIs/data services from around the web. You do not have to submit your idea for approval, but it is recommended (to hendler+teaching@cs.rpi.edu).
Details
Each team will pick a NYS Senator or a NYS County/City (or other approved project) and “mashup” and visualize data about your person/location. As stated before, your mashup must use semantic data and use semantic technologies like SPARQL. We will provide you with tutorials and examples on how to use these technologies and datasets. We will also be hosting semantic datasets from http://www.nysenate.gov/opendata on our semantic government data portal for you to use.
You must also use datasets, APIs and services from around the web to mashup with our semantic data. We will provide some links and pointers to help get you started, but it’s advised that you spend some time searching and exploring what is out there.
We will provide a Drupal environment where you can develop and publish your mashup. Details on this will be provided to you soon.
Class on Thursday, December 2 will cover the basics in Semantic Web technologies and visualization APIs.
Project team names and subjects will need to be listed on the class wiki as with the other projects to date. Class on Monday, December 6 will be a work session.
Demos
There will be a signup sheet on the wiki for 15 minute slots on the demo days. Moving another team’s appointment will count as cheating unless you can demonstrate permission from the team.
Grading
The two key factors are the quality of the demo idea and a working demo. Note that in some cases, you may only be able to “stub” some piece of a demo – in that case, you should definitely contact the professor.
Academic Dishonesty
You are welcome and encouraged to work together and share as colleagues. Use of the Project 3 resources page to share with others is encouraged. However, altering someone else’s code, changing the demo of another team or student not on your team, altering the assignment page, or otherwise interfering with the ability of another team to succeed will be considered major violations and earn an immediate F on the assignment for the offending student or team.
